Honey Toy Industries, Inc.
Incorporated on November 17, 1960, Honey Toy Industries (H.T.I) was Harold Braunhut’s first company under which he sold Instant Life/Sea-Monkeys products & other novelty products throughout the 1960s.
As per the brand’s patent paperwork, it was on October 5, 1962, that Instant Life/Sea-Monkeys were first commercially available. From a single packet setup to a multi-packet process, from simple paperboard & plastic lining assemblies to the introduction of the Ocean-Zoo, the brand saw an evolution during those first few years that would set the foundation for some elements of the brand that still live on.
Instant Lifeⓒ 1962 H.T.I.
With a copyright of 1962, these two Instant Life paperboard kits are the earliest items we know to have been produced & made commercially available. These paperboard kits simply consisted of one foil pouch that one would mix in a glass container with 8 ounces of water.
In this variant with the hatching Sea-Monkey illustration, the instructions in the front tells the reader to feed the baby shrimp one grain of Fleischmann’s Yeast every few days. In the back, Wardley’s Brine Shrimp Food is also recommended.
This artwork was subsequently used as an ad inside the pages of some comic books in 1963.
In this variant, we see an early appearance of the “Sea-Monkeys” trademark; in the back, the brine shrimp used are identified as being Northern Canadian Brine Shrimp.

Ripley's Believe It or Not!
Featuring Ripley’s Believe It or Not! branding, this Sea Circus aquarium kit made its debut circa 1964, and consisted of a rudimentary cardboard & plastic liner setup. This circus-themed kit, which was all flatly packaged in its own branded plastic bag, included its own branded pouches, an audience cardboard cutout for decoration, and a small light bulb element that one could place at the base.
Magic Sea-Monkeys®
A NEW BIOLOGICAL MIRACLE from the creators of “SEA-CIRCUS”
With a copyright of 1967, this was a boxed starter kit which apparently included your primary pouches, instructions, and other supplies.
This product name & package design served as inspiration for the Sea-Monkeys® Magic Sand, released by Transcience in 2021.
Create Instant Life®
Released in the late 1960s, the Create Instant Life boxed kit included your primary pouches, a handbook, a magnifier, and a life insurance policy. This packaging box remained in use until the mid-1970s, when it eventually received various changes in some of it design elemenst and information.
Its name and box design served as inspiration for a spiritual successor released in 2022 by Transcience, and for the Classic Sea-Monkeys Retro Instant Life kit produced by Dragon-i Toys in 2024 for a wider retail market.

Living Sea-Gem
Released in the late 1960s, the Living Sea-Gem was a necklace that consisted of an 18-inch gold-plated chain & a glass ball pendant in which one could place a few Sea-Monkeys.
Handbook & Packets
In the late 1960s, we saw the publication of the handbook titled It’s FUN to RAISE Pet Sea-Monkeys, which would end up becoming the standard handbook for the brand for many decades. During those last few years of that decade, the initial version of the handbook saw a few revisions & variations in its cover color.

As the product evolved during this decade, we saw the introduction of the multi-packet hatching process we know today. During this time, the initial Plasma formula (which has its own convoluted naming and usage history) was packet number three, and the feeding formula was the fourth, unnumbered packet. Like the handbook, the three primary packets produced by the end of this decade featured a minimalistic wavy design.
Some of the earlier kits listed here had packets with their own specific design, but their documentation is very limited. We’ll update this section accordingly if we’re able to procure new material.

Other supplementary packets were eventually introduced in later years. While some appear listed in documentation with copyrights from the late 1960s, here on this website, we have not come across any material to independently verify and confirm if they were actually produced and released during this period.
In the 1970s handbooks, we can spot an illustration featuring the Red-Magic & Sea-Medic pouches with a design style similar to other pouches from the 1960s. Here on this website, we have not seen any photos of real-life specimens of those pouches.
